Smoking and Pregnancy: Effects on Birth Weight

Smoking has many negative health consequences for pregnant women and babies born to people who smoke.

However, there is potential for vaping products to reduce the negative health effects associated with smoking. Further research is needed to develop an evidence base in this area. A study from the prestigious King’s College London and the University of Edinburgh conducted a systematic review of vaping during pregnancy, covering prevalence, patterns of use, reasons for use, smoking cessation and health effects. Twenty-three excellent studies were identified as relevant.

From this review, it is clear that there are still insufficient data to draw conclusions about the prevalence, patterns, and effects of vaping during pregnancy and on smoking cessation. However, the limited literature suggests that smoking during pregnancy has little or no effect on birth weight.
